What you see here is Volvo’s M3/RS4 and maybe even C63 eater. This thing didn’t even cross my radar screen but, I won’t lie, my radar for hot sedans is generally aimed at Germany. This beast coming from the land that brought us cheap flat pack furniture came out of left field–at least for me. I mean, I’ve actually started to like the design of modern Volvos but I’ve never thought of them of being capable of building such a rocket.
Polestar, the racing division of Volvo, took a S60 and dropped it by 30mm and widened the track by 20mm in the front and 40mm in the rear. For suspension they threw on a set of Ohlins 3-way shock absorbers. Power is sent through a Haldex Gen 4 XWD and a Haldex E-LSD splits the torque to the rear wheels. Polestar also reinforced the M66C manual gear box and upgraded the brakes to 6-piston Polestar-Brembo calipers and 380mm discs in the front and Polestar-Volvo calipers with 302mm discs in the rear
The Polestar modified Volvo S60 puts out a tarmac-shredding 508hp and 424 lb/ft of torque–courtesy of a Garret 3171 turbo–which is enough to rocket from 0-60 in a scant 3.9s. The M3 takes 4.7s, or 4.5s with DCT. The RS4 which also boasts an AWD launch takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.6s. The C63 comes closest with a time of 4.3s.
The only problem here is that there won’t be too many M3/RS4/C63 drivers that are going to see the taillights of an S60 Polestar because Volvo has no plans to bring this S60 Polestar Concept to production. I’ve already told Volvo that they must release this car. Over 500hp and AWD. Sounds like a perfect winter beater to me. After seeing this beast in person I actually wanted to buy a Volvo.
