Volkswagen Passat Performance ConceptPosted by: Kenny Chan onJanuary 19th, 2013
Among our notes for the 2013 North American International Auto Show was a line that read “VW - Possible Passat R?”. It was a rumor that didn’t really have much substance but we kept it on our notes anyway. Turns out Volkswagen booth at NAIAS did have a high performance Passat… sorta. They showed off the Passat Performance Concept, built as an exercise to preview what a sportier Passat may look like.
For starters, the 1.8L engine delivering 250 horsepower lurking under the hood is far better than the current output of the 2.5L found in the current Passat that squeezes out a measly 170 horsepower. No fancy transmission is found in the Passat Performance Concept, the engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
On the exterior the most notable change are the 19″ ‘Luxor’ wheels, carbon-fiber side mirrors and the tiny trunk lip spoiler. On the inside some faux carbon fiber trim is splashed around the dashboard to with the black headliner and side pillars.
The Passat enjoyed its best sales year ever in 2012 so theres a chance VW will try to capitalize on that by attracting a younger more performance-minded shopper by offering a sportier performance model in the future and this may be a preview of what may be.
