Toyota Debuts Next Generation 2014 Rav4

Toyota took the opportunity at the 2012 LA Auto Show to debut the all new 4th generation 2014 RAV4 to the world. The all new design has been updated with a sleeker roofline, aggressive front and rear fenders, and bold tailights to give off a rugged look. The biggest exterior channge is the rear door, where it is now a traditional roof hinged tailgate. Often the biggest complaint of the RAV4, the outgoing model’s side hinged door is gone, along with the rear mounted spare tire. The spare now sits in the traditional spot under the rear cargo area.

On the inside, Toyota engineers were able to find more passenger space, allowing the cargo area to improve to 38.4 cu. ft. behind the rear seats. Folding down the 60/40 split seats increases things to a class leading 73.3 cu. ft. of storage space. The new steering wheel now includes controls for audio, Bluetooth, as well as buttons for the Multi-Informational Display. All RAV4’s will come standard with a 6.1″ LCD touchscreen and backup camera, with optional GPS, voice recognition, and 576 watt speaker system.

The new RAV4 comes equipped with the 176hp 2.5L 4 cylinder. Sadly, the optional V6 is discontinued. The AWD system has been recalibrated to offer a sportier drive, while suspension tweaks have been retuned for better handling characteristics. The AWD system delivers a rear bias under cornering to reduce understeer, while maintaining a front bias in normal driving to improve mileage. A new sport mode on the 6 speed automatic transmission improves shift speeds, while also rev-matching downshifts. On the AWD RAv4’s, sport mode also instantly adjusts front to rear bias (up to 50% rear) during cornering to improve overall traction and dynamics.

The new 2014 RAV4 will be available in early 2013. No prices have been announced at press time.
