The Lighter Side of SEMA – CF, CF Everywhere

Carbon Fiber is such a versatile material. It is lightweight, yet strong. It can be raw, clear coated or painted over. It can be purely aesthetic or structural. At the 2014 SEMA Show, we saw CF used in all shapes, and sizes. As we toured each of the halls at SEMA, in between shooting all the cars and models we made it a point to capture some of the carbon goodness that we experienced. While many of the vehicles just had carbon wings, lips or hoods there were more than a handful that had parts crafted from carbon fiber while some vehicles were completely covered in carbon.

Take a gander through the gallery, hope you enjoy the pictures!

Pirelli Launches P ZERO All Season Plus at SEMA 2014

Pirelli used the 2014 SEMA Show to launch their new P ZERO All Season Plus. We didn’t attend the launch festivities at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway but Pirelli is offering a 50,000 mile warranty on the new All Season Plus rubber and they also launched the Confidence Plus Plan which includes a 30-day free trial period.

To showcase the Pirelli rubber (we didn’t notice any of the vehicles wrapped in the new All Season Plus tire) they went with an E63 wagon, a Bentley Continental race car which we’ve covered from previous shows, a Vorsteiner Huracan, as well as a couple of older F1 cars from Honda and Sauber.

Check them out in the gallery!

Continental Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

We’re always trying to figure out how to cover the crazy huge SEMA show and this year we decided to share the major tire booths in the South Hall as well as the major manufacturer booths. The Continental Tire booth at the 2014 SEMA Show was well represented. A 1966 El Camino with a hardwood bed (this seemed to be the thing for truck beds this year) built by West Coast Customs was front and center. Right beside that was a beautifully done up 2011 Ddoge Challenger built by Petty’s Garage.

Another car I really liked at the Continental booth was Kyle Pecarovich’s silver twin-turbo V10 R8 with the carbon sideblades and rear wing that was sitting on a set of HREs. However, the most unique vehicle must’ve been the Karl Kustom Corvette Z067. A modern corvette converted to a ’67 vette by Lingenfelter. While making our way through the booth I didn’t even notice it was a conversion, pretty unique I must say!

Lexus Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

You’re going to have to excuse our coverage of the Lexus booth at SEMA 2014. In previous years Lexus would run their promotions and giveaway in a second location due to the small size of their booth but this year it was inside their already crowded booth resulting in a big lineup that snaked through their booth and the hallway obstructing all their vehicles from being shot properly.

Up on the main stage was the RC F GT3 Concept with its giant hologram rainbow logo adorning its sides. The RC F GT3 was unveiled earlier this year in Geneva but we’re seeing it for the first time here at SEMA. Under the hood the modified V8 develops 532 horsepower and with the stripped interior weighs only 2,756 pounds.

Flanking the GT3 Concept on one side was a red RC 350 F Sport by Beyond Marketing. It features, wait for it, a custom Rocket Bunny wide-body kit slammed on a set of Enkei wheels wrapped in Toyo R888s. Under the wheels are a set of Brembo 6-piston clampers and 15″ rotors up front. On the other side was a Molten Pearl NX built by Elite Motorworks riding on a set of 21″ HRE P104 forged wheels in black wrapped in Toyo T1R rubber.

BMW-MINI Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

BMW and MINI brought both old and new to their 2014 SEMA booth which was built to push their BMW M Performance catalog. They brought a Z4 GTLM race car, which I’m pretty sure is the same one that makes the International show car circuit. They also had on hand a M4 Coupe safety car from MotoGP as well as an M3 promoting their BMW Performance Driving School. My favorite car on the BMW side of the booth was the pristine 2002 tucked away in the back that barely anyone checked out, so unappreciated.

On the MINI side were a trio of MINI Coopers with a DJ setup on the roof of one of them providing tunes for, well… nobody. We had arrived at the BMW MINI booth near the end of the day and the crowds were thinning out. We were told that there was a Playboy Playmate, Miss October 2012 Pamela Horton at the booth but unfortunately we did not see her. I guess she took all the booth attendees with her.

Ford Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

We knew Ford was going to bring a handful of Mustangs to SEMA 2014 due to the recent refresh, but we didn’t expect the variety we got. From nearly stock to the outrageous King Cobra, Ford brought a complete collection of cool to Las Vegas. And we loved all of them. Snakeskin paint jobs, wings wider than I am tall, wheels with more lip than your teenage daughter… Ford brought exactly what I wanted to see at SEMA, and we haven’t even talked about the other vehicles!

Want the off-road capabilities of a Raptor, but don’t have room for a full-size truck in your garage? Pic yourself up a two-seater baby Raptor. Fanboy that wants to spend more time talking about a car than driving it? They had a Fiesta ST almost as ugly as their drivers! Benyl is going to dedicate some time to talk about trucks specifically, but Ford had my favourite trucks of the show due to, again, their diversity. There was something for everybody.

My favourite car of the booth? Easily the #43 Monster Hoonigan Mustang. A perfect blend of classic muscle and modern motorsport. It’s filthy and over the top and I love it.

Take a look through the gallery and find your favourite.

Toyota Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

The FT-1 may have been Toyota’s star of SEMA, but their booth was packed with fun and interesting vehicles spanning the entire range. The one that got our attention was Toyota’s own sleeper drag car. The body of a Camry hid an 850hp supercharged V8. We think they should consider a similar option in production models. Their performance team, TRD, also showed up with a special edition 4Runner and Tacoma, ready for whatever terrain the Vegas desert could offer.

From outside Toyota’s own builders, DUB brought an insanely cool widebody Yaris and a very clean Camry while Sirius XM decked out a Sienna with audio goodies. Tonka and Tim Love each brought a Tundra, though with very different purposes. The Tonka Tundra was an outrageous off-road machine, whereas the Tim Love Tundra was an outrageous tail-gating machine, with a barbecue built into the bed.

Hyundai Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

You know whoever is in charge of the Hyundai SEMA show cars is a performance freak as each year they make sure to bring something with astronomical power numbers. This year at the 2014 SEMA Show, they brought a couple vehicles to help with that. First up is the white Ark Performance Genesis. This beast is really tastefully done with just the right amount of carbon fiber added to it to keep it looking great without being overdone. Under the hood a Rotrex supercharger bumps the horsepower figure to 550. On the show floor the Genesis was dropped down on its air suspension with its forged concave wheels just slightly tucked. A set of Brembo brakes provides some improved stopping power.

I said that Hyundai brought some cars with astronomical power numbers, while 550 horsepower from the Genesis doesn’t really fit that description, the Bisimoto built 708 horsepower Sonata definitely does even if it’s a lot less than the 1,029 horsepower Genesis Bisimoto built for SEMA last year. Parked beside the Bisimoto Sonata was the JP Edition Sonata which according to Hyundai is supposed to connect Los Angeles street art culture with automotive enthusiasts. I’m not too familiar with Los Angeles street art culture but I don’t think a blank white canvas really reflects that. An AEM cold air intake and MagnaFlow exhaust kit are listed as the performance mods. Alrighty then.

Toca Marketing Group built the “Steel Phoenix” Genesis which features a one-off Garrett twin turbo setup to force feed the 5.0L V8 pushing the output to 600 horsepower. A full ARK Performance catback exhaust system is included to help the engine breathe a bit.

Now let’s talk about the big power. The red Blood Type Racing built Genesis Coupe in the middle of the booth not only looks aggressive with its wide bolt on over fenders and super wide body kit by Japanese designer Kei Miura, but is packing nearly 1000 horsepower under the hood via a Precision turbo with the boost cranked way up plus a shot of nitrous. The BTR Genesis Coupe is 40mm wider up front and 60mm wider out back.

Chevy Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

Each year at the SEMA Show, Chevy sets up a big booth in the central hall and packs it with their fleet of cars and trucks including the Corvette, Camaro, Colorado, Silverado and even the compacts are represented with the Sonic. For this year, Chevy bid adieu to the current generation Camaro with a couple special edition Camaros. They actually enlisted the help of their fans to help name their special edition Camaro and what has the internet come up with for the #NameThatCamaro contest? From now on, the 2015 Special Edition Camaro will be known as the Green Flash Special Edition.

In order to confuse thing even further though, they also had another special or rather, commemorative edition Camaro dressed in silver with a wrap around stripe which you can see below. With so many cars in their booth its tough to mention them all but they also had on a hand the 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro Concept of which only 69 copies will be build.

Kia Booth Tour – SEMA 2014

The Kia booth at the SEMA Show is always fun to check out. In 2012 they had the super hero themed booth, last year they had an all Kia Soul music themed booth and this year they didn’t disappoint with their race weekend themed booth.

The crowds were definitely drawn to the Kia Sedona turned mobile bar on the far side of the booth. There was a constant line-up for the beer provided by Ballast Point, a craft brewery from San Diego. The rear of the Sedona was completely ripped out and replaced with a fully functioning bar complete with a couple taps that were kept busy serving beer for all the thirsty SEMA show attendees. If you aren’t a fan of the pick-up truck style look on the Sedona, Kia also had a second Sedona built with a karting enthusiast in mind. Capable of transporting a couple karts (one on the roof mounted kart storage rack and one out back on the trailer) and their associated parts, this Sedona would make weekend trips to the local kart track pretty fun.

On the other side of the booth was a retro styled Kia Soul converted into a food truck serving freshly made ice-cream by Smitten. The Soul was painted in two-toned cherry red with white accent along with a matching red and white interior. To finish off the exterior the Soul was wearing a set of red retro styled wheels with white lip.

Check out our full gallery of the Kia Booth at SEMA 2014 after the break.
