Mercedes-Maybach S Class Unveiled at LA Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, and now, Mercedes-Maybach. Mercedes discontinued the Maybach name in 2012, but have decided to resurrect the brand to fight the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce. Compared with the standard S class, if you can even call the S standard, the Mercedes-Maybach versions will feature even higher quality of materials, finer details, and a cockpit that’s more first class than business class. Even the seat belt buckles glow.

2 models are being introduced in this brand resurrection, starting with the S500 with a 455hp 4.7L biturbo V8. Topping the range is the S600 with the almighty 6.0L biturbo V12 producing a monstrous 530hp. Later in 2015, in June to be exact, the S500 4Matic version arrives, which is a welcome sight for the Canadian market. At press time there is no mention of an AMG version, but don’t be surprised if one makes its way to the showroom if the Mercedes-Maybach brand does well.

How will the new Mercedes-Maybach brand do? Let’s hope better than the last time they resurrected the famed name. Expect to see the new Mercedes-Maybachs February of 2015, while pricing will be announced a couple of months earlier in December. Chauffeur not included.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid, Paris Motor Show

We’ve heard quite a bit over the last 12 months on the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid, and it finally makes its public debut here at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. With manufactures racing to lower CAFE averages, green models are being introduced in all market segments.

The S500 Hybrid is powered by the all-new 3.0L V6 biturbo engine, introduced this year in the C400 and E400 sedans. The engine pumps out 328hp in the S500 Hybrid, while the electric motor, cleverly installed in the transmission, pumps out an additional 114hp for a total of 442hp, allowing the 4700lb S500 Hybrid to accelerate to 100km/h in only 5.2 seconds. The battery, installed within the floor of the trunk, reduces storage capacity by 25% at a still healthy 395L, and can be recharged in as little as 2 hours.

Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) Preview – Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil several new cars and concepts at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. The AMG variant of the all new S-Class debuts as the S63 AMG. Fitted with the tried and true 5.5L V8 twin turbo powerplant, the S63 pumps out 577hp and 663 lb-ft of torque. Weighing 250lbs less than its predecessor, the S63 propels itself to 100km/h in 4 seconds flat, thanks to its 4matic drivetrain and MCT sports transmission.

Along with the S63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz is introducing the S500 Plug-in Hybrid, which averages a staggering 3L/100km of consumption. A 107hp electric motor is paired to a new 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine with 328hp, bringing total power output of the S500 Hybrid to 436hp, and 0-100km/h sprints of 5.5 seconds. This new V6 engine will also power next year’s C400 model, a direct competitor to BMW’s 335. The biggest difference with the S500 Plug-in Hybrid is the ability to charge by plugging in the vehicle.
