AutoMaxx / Varsity Chrysler Threaten to Sue Beyond.ca
We received an e-mail earlier this week from a chap named Gord Moors. He introduced himself as the owner of Varsity Chrysler and AutoMaxx Calgary. Regular readers of beyond would instantly recognize the name as there have been a few reviews written about those dealerships and a sales person by the name of Chris Thin. Anyway, Gord explains in subsequent e-mails that certain members on the forums are posting threats of violence towards Chris Thin. Our moderators removed those posts as soon as they were discovered (this thread is 4 years old!) but Gordy still wasn’t happy with how we dealt with it. For the full e-mail correspondence, check out the forum thread.
Shoot or Don’t Shoot?
We (the public) often criticize law enforcement for using deadly force in situations that we feel do not warrant it. Here is a thread with a few scenarios for you to read and decide if you would shoot if you were a police officer. There are no right/wrong answers to the scenarios, but its interesting to see the different responses.
City of Calgary Recycling Program
The blue recycling carts are gradually being delivered to more residents in the city and has sparked another recycling debate. Its too bad the city did not allow homeowners to opt out of the recycling program but most seem to be in favor of the program. I find it odd that the recycling fee is mandatory when the city will still be operating the community recycling centers (after they convert it to accept the same materials as the blue carts). Most condo/apartment complexes already have their own recycling programs so who will be using the community recycling centers?
The City of Calgary blue cart curb side recycling program will start to roll out on March 9th. The city plans to phase in the system starting with the SW quadrant. Delivery should be complete by early April and the first collections will begin on April 21-24 (same day of the week as your garbage collection day). The city will then proceed to the NW, NE and finally the SE. Collection will begin on June 9 - 12, June 30 - July 3 and May 12 - 15 in those respective quadrants.
The blue carts will certainly make recycling much easier as you no longer need to sort your recyclables. For those of you who already recycling using your community recycling depots, the city will accept plastics in the blue cart recycling program. All plastics with codes 1-7 will be accepted.
All this convenience unfortunately comes at a cost. $8 will be added to your Enmax bill as soon as collection service starts in your area. The curb side recycling program is also not an optional program so even if you decide to use your blue cart as a new lawn ornament you will still be billed $8 each month. Community recycling depots will also be converted to accept plastics, and will also no longer require sorting after the conversion.
Is the convenience worth it? Will you recycling bottles with deposits using the blue cart curb side recycling program or will you continue bringing them to the bottle depot yourself? It will be interesting to see how this program will affect local charity/fundraising bottle drives.
The City will be doing a series of Open Houses if you want more information:

Best TV Shows Flying Under the Radar
There is a lot of great television on these days, in fact theres too much! I can’t even keep up with a PVR so I’ve had to stop watching certain shows that don’t make the cut as there just isn’t enough time to keep up. Many people miss out on shows simply because there are so many of them trying to get our attention and inevitably, some of them slip under the radar. What are some shows you love that are not getting the attention they deserve?
Speed On Green Cameras Approved in Alberta
Red Light Cameras in Edmonton and Calgary will soon have a new feature enabled on them that will let the Police collect revenue for those that speed through intersections. While the original rationale behind the push for “speed on green” cameras was to nab drivers that sped up when the light turned yellow, the functionality allows the cameras to take photos of drivers that speed through intersections even on fresh greens. The province has allowed cameras to begin operating with the new features effective January 1, 2009 but it will take some time to turn on the new features. Calgary Police plan on having a grace period of 90 days before actual tickets are issued.
Tom’s Bottle Recycling Center Reviews Thread
This thread just had to be a part of the weekly review! :) Tom has been gracious enough to write up a review of two bottle depots in Calgary when he recently did a quick test of them. He got 100% of the money he was supposed to at both places and gives them both a thumbs up if you plan on recycling some bottles in the near future (who isn’t with all the CHRISTMAS dinners coming up?).
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! :)
