Porsche 918 Spyder Debuts with Blistering Ring Time

Porsche unveiled the final production version of its new super sportscar plug-in hybrid in Frankfurt, the 918 Spyder, to news that it has lapped the famed Nurburgring with a time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds, a full 14 seconds off the previous record.

I wrote about the 918 Spyder during our Porsche IAA 2013 preview, so I’ll just copy and paste it here if you missed it:

The highly anticipated Porsche 918 Spyder, the first plug-in hybrid by the automaker, will be making its world debut. The 918 Spyder has made its rounds at auto shows already but this will be the final production version. A 4.6L V8 engine outputting over 600 horsepower will be paired up with a set of electric motors that produce 155 and 125 horsepower for a combined hybrid power output of over 887 horsepower! 100 km/h arrives from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds and all it’ll take is 3.0L / 100km. For short trips to the grocery store, the 918 Spyder can operate on pure electric power with a range of just over 30km.
