Nissan’s Emission Scandal

The ripple effect of Volkswagen’s emission scandal can be felt throughout the entire automotive industry. The latest automaker to be in the spotlight is Nissan who is being accused for cheating on emission tests with their diesel engines, specifically the one in their Qashqai compact crossover.

The Environment Ministry of South Korea found discrepancies in testing and real world emission data in the Qashqai after submitting over 20 different automobiles through rigorous testing. So far Nissan has denied any wrongdoing on their part and states that their Qashqai conforms to all emission regulations under Korean law.

A stop sale has been issued to Nissan in South Korea on the Qashqai and the company has been issued a $280,000 fine for the cheating. South Korean officials are also looking to charge South Korea Nissan CEO with violating the emission regulations.

Drug Fire Kills Dogs and Skylines

A few days ago, we brought you news on marijuana’s danger to drivers. Today, we bring you news on marijuana’s danger to cars.

Not too long ago we reported on a fire at International Vehicle Importers which unfortunately claimed the lives of their two shop dogs and a whole host of JDM imports which the company specializes in importing into Southern California. At the time of the fire, the cause was unknown, but now a building adjacent to IVI has been identified as the source of the fire.

That particular building was also housing a pot-growing operation which was just setting up shop. According to Sean Morris, owner of IVI, he noticed heavy traffic moving in and out all day before the fire, so he suspects that the grow-op overloaded the buildings power breakers which started the fire.

International Vehicle Importers is known for importing rare Japan only vehicles into the US. This includes several Nissan Skyline GT-Rs, Toyota Soarers, and Mazda Cosmos.

Mitsubishi to Sell 30% to Nissan

Mitsubishi has found itself in a lot of trouble lately for their fuel economy numbers scandal. Based on preliminary investigations, it looks as though the number of models impacted by the scandal might be larger than expected. This is certainly doing nothing good for the company’s branding or their stocks.

Reports coming out of Japan’s Nikkei is stating that the top buyer for those Mitsubishi shares is Nissan. If the deal goes through, which looks very promising as the deal is rumored to be in the very late phases, Nissan will not only own 30% of Mitsubishi, it will also become the largest share holder.

The 30% shares is expected to give Mitsubishi a solid $1.84 billion bump in capital which will help them out significantly considering the financial hit they are taking on the stock market. The company, in the grand scheme is still fairing alright through their scandal turmoil.

A Stable of Skylines Perished

International Vehicle Importers in Ontario, CA have been bringing Nissan Skylines to American customers for some time now. Let’s be clear here, I’m not talking about the current Nissan GTR that anyone with enough cash can buy from a dealership. I’m talking about those ultra exclusive first generation Hakosukas, R32, R33 and R34s all of which were never brought to the US by Nissan.

So what makes this such a sad story is that a fire broke out at one of IVI’s locations and all 24 Nissan R32 GTRs they had in stock were destroyed by the inferno. Even more unfortunate is that the owner, Sean Morris’ two shop dogs were also lost in the blaze.

Cars can be replaced, and Morris actually has other warehouses full of GTRs, but the loss of a mans best friend is something no money can buy.

Nissan Recalls 3 Million for Faulty Airbag

Nissan has issued a recall on over 3 million vehicles in the US with a faulty airbag issue. Nissan has identified the issue as a faulty Occupant Classification System which may incorrectly sense the passenger as a child instead of an adult. In the event of this happening, the airbag will be deactivated in the passenger seat and will not deploy during an accident.

Nissan’s recall directly impacts their 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV, Leaf, and Sentra. The 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima; 2013-2017 Nissan Pathfinder; 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, and Infiniti Q50; 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue; 2015-2016 Nissan Murano; 2013 Infiniti JX35; and 2015-2016 Chevrolet City Express, which is based on the NV200 are all impacted as well which all adds up to over 3 million vehicles impacted.

Nissan Murano and Maxima Recalled for Brake Issues

2016 Nissan Maxima

Nissan has issued a recall on their 2016 Murano and Maxima vehicles. The company has identified an issues with the antilock braking system and vehicle dynamic control system. A faulty O-ring in the ABS actuator is causing brake fluid to leak which results in a loss of braking performance on the vehicle and may increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan will begin recalling these vehicles and notifying customers beginning June 2016. So far, no accidents or injuries have been linked to this recall. If your car is affected, you will need to bring it into the dealer ship where the braking system will be inspected and all faulty parts will be replaced at no cost to you.

We encourage you to contact your local dealers for more information.

Nissan Navara-R by Severn Valley Motorsport

Severn Valley Motorsport in Shropshire, England is probably not a shop that most are familiar with over here in Canada. I, however, have fond memories of this shop from back in the days when they were churning out some killer Ford Sierra Cosworths. Being a Euro Ford freak myself, seeing the shop’s name pop up again brought back much nostalgia, but more importantly they once again don’t disappoint with their creations.

This time, instead of sticking to a blue oval, they’ve gone Japanese. Specifically, they’ve taken to modifying out a Nissan Navara pick up truck. Yup, you read that right. What’s even more insane is the Nissan GTR motor stuffed under the hood and boosted up to a healthy 800hp. Take a deeper look and you’ll quickly realize this isn’t just an ordinary engine swap.

What SVM has done is actually taken the Navara’s body and mated it to the entire chassis of a GTR. So essentially, this is a GTR with Navara body panels. The conversion isn’t cheap at $251,000USD. But for those who are longing for the ultimate sleeper, I’m pretty sure this one will fit the bill.

Waiting Continues for Nissan’s Compact RWD Sportscar

We have all been waiting for Nissan to develop a small rear wheel drive sportscar that will compete against the likes of Mazda’s Miata or the Toyota 86. But it seems like we’ll have to continue waiting for that dream to come true.

Executives at Nissan has confirmed that they will continue to put energy towards their flagship sports car the GT-R and their Z sport coupe. Producing a small rear wheel drive sports car is not in the pipeline. It is currently cost prohibitive to develop this type of vehicle as it would be a ground up design. Without partners to share in designing a platform, the costs involved are just way too high and not economical.

If options come up for Nissan to share development costs, there could be a possibility that the small sports car could come to market. But until then, the idea will sit quietly on the back shelves of the Nissan development group.

The Real Godzilla: 2000hp Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R has always been known to be a potent performance beast. Now the team at T1 Race Development has yet again pushed the boundaries of capabilities of the GT-R. Their newest creation is called the GT1R which pumps out 2,165hp and 1,302lb/ft of torque.

On paper those numbers are already impressive. Equally as impressive is how that GT1R puts that power to use. It covers the quarter-mile in just 7.38 seconds and can reach a top speed of 235 mph in just half a mile. Tony Palo, founder of T1 Race Development, displays the GT-R is even capable of being a street car.

Nissan Rogue Recalled for Faulty Fuel Pump

Nissan has issued a recall which impacts approximately 76,000 Rogue which were built in 2014. This is the second recall for the same issue that was identified last year, except this new recall covers the entire range of vehicles with a 2014 build date.

The issue has been identified as poor nickel plating on components inside the fuel pump. The poorly plated parts may begin to deteriorate and cause pieces of the coating to stop the fuel pump impellers from spinning. Once the fuel pump stops functioning, the Rogue will not be able to start, or potentially stall while on the road.

Currently, no accidents of deaths have been linked to this recall campaign. If you own a Rogue with a build year of 2014, contact your local dealers immediately and schedule in a service for the recall. Dealers will replace the faulty fuel pump at no cost to owners.
