BMW M Car Differential Problems

BMWs are designed for driving pleasure, but when production issues get in the way of that motto BMW does the right thing and issues a stop-delivery order on 202 cars that have been affected. The issue is with their M2, M3, M4, M5, and 5 and 6 Series models that were produced between May 12 and July 4, 2016, and has been identified as a rear differential problem.

No official statement has been released on what the exact issue is, but it is a big enough problem that BMW is stopping sales and ensuring a proper fix is in place before returning to normal production schedule. Customers who have one of these vehicles on order are encouraged to contact their local dealership to determine if their vehicle is part of the stop-delivery.

BMW’s M5 Competition Edition

BMW is producing a very limited run of M5s called the Competition Edition, but it won’t be offered to the North American market. The car will be made in a limited run of 200 units and will feature a number of improvements over the standard and very capable M5.

First up on the upgrade list is a modified engine that bumps the performance of the 4.4L V8 to 600hp and 520lb/ft of torque. That’s a significant horsepower bump over the standard engine which churns out 560hp and 500lb/ft of torque. With the engine power bump, you have to have some massaging of the suspension to handle the new found power. BMW added larger sway bars, sport springs and a sport tuned dampers, and tweaked the steering system to provide more feedback and more direct input for the performance sedan.

On the outside, the Competition Edition M5 will feature carbon fiber accents over either Carbon Black metallic paint, or Mineral White metallic. Both colors aren’t over the top, but maintains a traditional color palate which suits well for the design of the car. When the car hits European showroom floors, the price tag should just top $140,000.

BMW M4 GTS May Arrive on North American Soil

bmw m4 gts

BMW has historically always made a special edition of their M-cars. Following the M3 lineup, the Bavarian automaker has developed the 1988 M3 Evolution, the 1990 M3 Sport Evo, the 95 M3 GT, the 03 M3 CSL, the 2010 M3 GTS and then the 201 M3 CRT. Now to add to that lineup, 300 M3 GTS Special Edition will arrive in the US out of the 700 to be produced.

These special edition vehicles usually get a standard package treatment which includes more horsepower, tuned suspension, weight savings, and new aero all for the sole purpose of making a track ready street vehicle. The new M4 GTS is no different with power bumped to 493hp and 442lb/ft of torque which propels it to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds. The entire package together was put to the test at the legendary Nurburgring circuit where it clocked in a 7-minute, 28-second lap.

2016 BMW 7 Series Airbag Recalled

bmw 7 series

BMW is recalling 26,000 of their flagship 7 series due to a potential airbag module issue. The problem is that the airbag control module which are in any series produced before December 1, 2015 are defective and result in possibly the airbag not deploying.

According to a spokesperson for BMW, the production numbers of 2016 BMW 7 Series is close to 47,000 to date. So over half of the new modeled vehicles will need to be recalled for this issue. BMW also states that the recall is a precautionary measure.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by their local dealerships in May by letter. We also encourage owners to reach out to their local dealership for more information.

BMW’s X4 has made quite a dent in the Sport Coupe Vehicle space racking up an increase of 118 percent in sales in 2015. Therefore, it’s only fitting that BMW starts off 2016 but debuting an M variant of the X4 to celebrate the success of this model in the BMW lineup. The X4 M40i made its debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show today where BMW President and CEO of North America Ludwig Willisch spoke to a packed room about the impressive vehicle with an equally impressive spec sheet.

The exterior of the M40i has been worked over by the people over in the M-department giving this X4 a nice muscular boost all around. BMW M2 World Premiere at Detroit NAIAS

It’s been nearly 3 months since BMW unveiled the new M2 on the internet, one of the most anticipated entry level M cars from the boys in Munich. Today, we finally get to see it with our own eyes. The BMW M2 builds on the success that is the M235i, which in itself is an entry level taste to the world of M cars.

The M2 is a striking car, much like how the 1M transformed the BMW 135i. Large air intakes, wide body fender flares, and 19” wheels push the testosterone level up from the M235i from which it was based. The engine, derived from the N55, adopts pistons and crank bearings from the BMW M3/M4 S55 motor to allow it to rev like it’s big brother. The result is 370hp and 343 lb-ft of torque (with an optional overboost to 369lb-ft). Coupled with the superb M-DCT transmission and launch control, the BMW M2 rockets to 60mph in a scant 4.2 seconds.

The BMW Group At SEMA 2015

Hey look, MINI and BMW vehicles grouped together. Sometimes we make logical decisions, or perhaps some of the alcohol has worn off and we’re thinking a bit more clearly.

The BMW group had great representation at the 2015 edition of the SEMA Show. A couple notable examples would be Bulletproof Automotive’s BMW Z4 GT Continuum which was at the Toyo booth and a vehicle we referred to as “the rusty BMW”. The GT Continuum was a special project for their 15th anniversary. Like the MX-5 Speedster the GT Continuum ditches the windshield and also removes the folding metal roof. The end result looks like a steam-roller drove over the Z4 as it looks really low from hood to trunk.

The rusty BMW was actually not a build with actual rusty panels like you would see at your local DUBfest shows but instead, as I learned when googling the vehicle, a look the owner/builder created by rubbing motor oil on the exposed panels. The vehicle was actually pretty heavily damaged in a garage fire but his team was able to rebuild and salvage parts of the vehicle to turn it into the tube-framed beast you see here.

Check it, and the some of the other BMW and MINIs that we shot at the 2015 SEMA show.

BMW makes its futuristic i brand vehicles – the i3 and i8 – at a plant in Leipzig, Germany. But the customers most willing to buy one of these plug-in cars live where the lightweight carbon fiber used in the body structure is made: North America.
