Takata Must Change Quality Culture

Takata_safety_culture

Takata Corp has been under fire for its poor handling of the airbag crisis. An independent panel of former government regulators and engineering experts were put together by Takata last year to identify the root cause of the problem at their factories as evidence was pointing to a manufacturing flaw in their airbag inflators. However, finding the root cause and correcting it might only be a band aid to a broader systematic problem.

“It is unlikely that even the most Herculean isolated efforts to improve quality at Takata will succeed unless there’s an accompanying shift in Takata’s culture,” stated in a report from the independent panel. Internal processes need to change in order for proper documentation and accountability for test findings of product performance and product reliability. More importantly, a proactive approach to enforce quality standards needs to be put in place and adopted across all levels of the organization. Currently, Takata does not have its own quality program, rather, they take a reactive approach and rely on safety incident reports from their automaker customers.
