Chevy’s 10 Speed Auto Faster than Porsche’s PDK

camaro zl1

That’s quite the statement from Chevy when the claim is put up again one of, if not the best automatic transmissions out there on the market. Porsche’s PDK transmission is known for its fast and precise shifting, and even more importantly, capable of handling the immense amounts of power the automaker can throw at it.

Now comes the new entrant, a ten speed automatic transmission from Chevy which is found in the all new Camaro ZL1. Chevy states that their transmission is indeed faster and more precise than Porsche’s PDK. In fact, each gear shift between first through fourth is at least 25% faster than the PDK transmission. Chevy is able to pull this off with it’s intricately, and technologically advanced, clutch mechanisms inside their new transmission. The new transmission packs in six clutches which makes it behave like a dual clutch transmission, but there’s ultimately still a torque converter inside the whole setup.

According to Chevy, this combination allows their all new ten speed transmission to perform like a dual clutch transmission, but offer the refinement of a traditional automatic transmission.

Chevy Sonic Gets Refreshed and Updated

Chevrolet brought out their all new 2017 Chevrolet Sonic today at the New York Auto Show and it got some new goodies.

The entire front end of the Sonic got a redesign bringing in new elements on the hood, bumper and headlights. Headlight technology has been updated to bring in projectors and LEDs as standard fare for the Sonic. New color options will also be available for the Sonic which will feature an Orange Burst Metallic, Brimstone, Cajun Red, and Arctic Blue Metallic.

The Sonic will get two engine choices for the upcoming generation. The base 1.8L four cylinder producing 138hp and 125lb/ft of torque. A new 1.4L turbo four cylinder will also be available which produces 138hp and 148lb/ft of torque. Both engines are designed for fuel economy but will offer some pep given the small size of the Sonic.

Look for the Chevy Sonic to be at dealerships very soon.

2017 Camaro 1LE

The all new sixth generation Camaro will again be offered in the 1LE package. The 1LE designation may be lesser known to car buyers, but what the badging refers to is a “Performance on the Track” package and will be offered with both V6 and V8 options. The 2017 model will be debuting at the Chicago Auto Show.

The 1LE is all about being able to take a street car right on to the track and most importantly be able to record faster lap times than the stock Camaro. This is all done by focusing on three things, grip, handling and cooling. The 1LE package has a specially designed aero package that helps to generate more downforce on the track. The suspension has been beefed up to help in the handling department. Larger brakes are used to help the car maintain better braking performance throughout the track day, and better ventilation and air channeling is utilized at the front to bring more cool air through the engine bay.

Throughout muscle car history, automakers have produces a variety of optional packages for customers to choose to build their own dream cars. The LE1 package is just one of many choices in the Chevy options department. The most interesting one in this year’s offering is still a V6 engine choice. Although lacking in power compared to its V8 counterpart, the LE1 V6 package is uniquely combined together to make the car drive and perform at it’s peak ability. I for one love the sound of a good American V8, but honestly Chevy’s V6 bellows out quite a note as well.

Chevy Volt to Share its Electrical Powertrain

The folks over at GM created something really special in the Chevy Volt. It’s power plant is a 1.5L four-cylinder gas motor with two electric motors and an 18.4-kWh battery. This design got the Chevy Volt onto the 10 Best Engines list for 2016, and was recognized with the Green Car of the Year Award.

It is no wonder that GM’s competitors are interested in their technology. However, what is surprising is word spreading of a potential collaboration between GM and other automakers where the GM power plant could potentially find its ways under its competitions cars. Nothing is official at this point, however, the thought of a shared powertrain is an interesting concept.

General Motors global powertrain chief Dan Nicholson said “We want to be the partner of choice in propulsion system development in this complex and turbulent era we are approaching.” By going this route, partnering automakers could manufacture hybrid cars without the huge expense of powertrain development and GM could essentially translate that cost savings down to the consumers.

The bigger picture here is that a partnership deal like this could bring many more option for green vehicles to the market place in much shorter time and potentially at a lower buy in price.

Chevrolet Spark Redesigned

Chevy’s entry into the minicar segment, the Chevrolet Spark, gets an all new redesigned model this year. The new Spark is longer and lower, resulting in a much sleeker look compared to it’s predecessor while maintaining the same headroom. As a bonus, the changes result in lower aerodynamic drag, bringing in gains in efficiency.

An all new engine powers the new spark. The 98hp 1.4L Ecotec is coupled to a manual or optional CVT transmission, delivering 40mph when coupled to the latter drivetrain package. To aid in urban driving situations, rear view camera comes standard, and a huge list of active safety features are available as an option. Forward collision alert, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, as well as self parking features round out the safety and convenience list in this little minicar. Good thing, because optional Wi-Fi connectivity might keep you a little distracted.

The All New Chevy Malibu

I do a fair bit of travelling, so I’ve spent a lot of time with the Chevy Malibu, the de facto mid sized “standard” rental car. It’s not the most exciting car out there to drive, nor is it the best looking, but it gets the job done. With the unveiling of the all new Malibu, I’ll feel a little more stylish the next time I’m in a rental.

The biggest difference with the updated car is the looks. Bringing modern design cues to a what was a really bland and dated design, the restyled shape brings the Malibu in line with the current Impala. The interior grows significantly thanks to the longer wheelbase, and rear leg room grows 1.3 inches, perfect for your travel companions. In car Wi-Fi, wireless charging, and USB ports for the rear seats ensure all your gadgets are ready to go when you hit your destination.

Chevy Bolt To Fight Against Tesla EV Dominance

As part of a two hit combo aimed at taking down Tesla Motors, Chevy has unveiled a more direct competitor to Tesla’s (future) offerings. We’ve told you about Chevy’s next generation 2016 Volt, but here at the 2015 NAIAS, the Chevy Bolt concept was also unveiled. The Bolt EV concept is a essentially a slightly larger, and much longer range version of the Volt in a body that looks more like the Spark aimed squarely at the Tesla.

“The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers.”

With a target price of $30,000 and a 200 mile electrical range, the Bolt will definitely take care of the exclusivity (an obvious dig at Tesla) issue for long range electrical vehicles. Chevrolet plans to sell the Bolt in all 50 states and other global markets and not just in regions and locales with heavy incentives.

Design wise, the Bolt EC pushes the definitions of a crossover. While smaller than most, by pushing the axles to the extreme front and rear, the interior space is maximized to provide a roomy environment for four people. Vented rear fenders and light weight materials help to maximize range. A frosted glass panoramic roof and wrap around rear window help to further give the interior that open airy feeling. The center console, mounted to the front seats appears to be floating under the main dash. On the dash, a large 10″ touch screen provides access to most of the vehicle’s systems (there are hardly any physical buttons in the vehicle). Owners are also able to use their own smartphones as keys to the system, using presumably NFC.

Next Generation 2016 Chevy Volt Unveiled in Detroit

After offering a sneak peek at the next generation Chevy Volt at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Chevrolet has now officially unveiled the new EV here in Detroit at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at their high-tech booth adorned with 20 foot tall transparent display screens.

The new Chevy Volt gets a slight makeover on the front end, the split-grille from the older model has been broken up into two distinct grilles with the Chevy badge making its new home inside the smaller top grille. The larger lower grille features active grille shutters that close during higher speeds. The LED fog lights have been rotated 90 degrees and now resemble a pair of fangs (or whiskers depending on how you see this car).

We saw in Vegas how the new Volt looked, so what is different under the hood? Before we start let’s recap some of the current generation Volt specs. Armed with a 1.4L four-cylinder engine and electric motor the current Volt can make it 38 miles on all-electric power before the gas engine powers up giving it a total range of 375+ miles.

The new 2016 Chevy Volt gets a slightly bigger 1.5L four-cylinder gas engine. The electrical propulsion system has been updated to a two motor based system delivering nnearly 20% stronger acceleration down low (0 – 48 km/h). The new drive unit sheds 100 pounds off the new Volt. The battery has also been upgraded to a 18.4 kWh unit that not only provides a longer all-electric range of 50 miles (38 miles on current gen Volt), but also sheds another 21 pounds. The new overall range is expected to be more than 400 miles (about 20 miles more than the existing Volt). 0-60 times have been reduced to 8.4 seconds.

Chevrolet Reveals Two Cars That Don’t Belong on the Road

Chevrolet brought two new vehicles to the 2014 LA Auto Show, the Chaparral 2X Vision GT concept and Colorado ZR2 off-road concept.

Chevrolet’s Vision GT, like Volkswagen’s, is a purely conceptual race car designed specifically for Playstation’s Gran Turismo Vision GT project and will never see the light of production. That doesn’t stop it from being cool as hell and worthy of its own gallery.

Like the Vision GT, the Colorado ZR2 is a concept meant for off-road use., but this one might actually show up in dealerships. The ZR2 features a plethora of off-road features which make it an enticing offering for anybody with one foot in the mud. A wider track, grille with integrated winch, quick release spare tire, 2″ lift, skid plates, and front/rear e-lock differential are some of the notable enhancements over the base model. Also new in the ZR2 is Chevy’s new 2.8L Cummins turbo diesel. Making 180hp and 365ft/lb of torque, the new engine may have been revealed in a concept car, but has been confirmed in the 2016 Colorado.

Both vehicles are exciting in their own right and deserve a thorough look. Check ’em out in the gallery below.

From now on, the 2015 Special Edition Camaro will be known as the Green Flash Special Edition.

In order to confuse thing even further though, they also had another special or rather, commemorative edition Camaro dressed in silver with a wrap around stripe which you can see below. With so many cars in their booth its tough to mention them all but they also had on a hand the 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro Concept of which only 69 copies will be build.
