Calgary Car Scene Circa 2001
A member takes us all back to 2001 by posting pictures of the car scene 7 years ago. Times have sure changed in 7 short years in Calgary. The starch based tuner scene was alive and well until a few years ago when “clean” cars took over and “ricers” were flamed out of existence. Will the tuner market have boom and bust cycles like the financial market? Will the tuner scene ever swing back into the agressive bodykit era? If you have some pictures of the car scene back in the day, please share!

GM Admits Their Products Suck
In A Desperate Bid To Get a Bailout GM ran full page ads on a few national newspapers to apologize to the American public for betraying their trust by producing crappy cars and trucks. Unfortunately for GM, the United Auto Workers union refuses to negotiate lower wages starting immediately and the Senate shot down the bailout. I hate unions, especially the UAW. They refuse to negotiate for lower wages until 2011, you know… about a couple years after the company will enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Winter Cruise - Sunday December 14 - Crazy Cold Edition
A bunch of crazy kids on the forums are organizing a winter cruise tomorrow. They will be meeting at the Edworthy Park south parking lot (Entrance nera Bow and Sarcee Trail). The forecasted high for Sunday is -27C and the low is -31C and with windchill the temperatures are expected to dip into the -40C range. If you are planning on attending this cruise, be sure to dress in warm clothes and it would be a good idea to throw some blankets in the trunk in case you run into any car troubles.

Cash & Cars Lottery Winner Takes Cash Instead Of Koenigsegg CCX
This years Cash & Cars lottery made headlines everywhere when they announced they were giving out a Koenigsegg CCX as the grand prize. It would be the only CCX in Canada as the car is not street legal here. However, the winner opted to take $1M cash instead of the CCX because the small town he is from, Norman Wells only has a single 12KM road. To top it off, there are no highways that lead to Norman Wells. It would totally suck to have a CCX you couldn’t drive wasting away in your garage!

Forum Post Counts Revised, Users In Uproar
This past week the forum post counts were revised to reflect only automotive based posts. Many users saw massive drops in their post counts and as a result, their “gear”. For anyone that is still curious, only posts on the car forums count towards your post total while posts under the lounge will not. Pretty simple change, but I guess some people take their post counts really seriously.

Nissan Solves the GT-R Launch Control and Weak Tranny Issue
There were widespread reports of GT-R transmissions blowing up when the proud new owners of Nissan’s brand new Porsche eater tried to repeat the numbers they read about in car magazines. The good news is that Nissan has fixed the problem on the 2010 Nissan GT-R, so no more worrying about losing half your gears when your tranny implodes racing that pesky 911. The bad news? You might lose to the 911 as Nissan has eliminated the launch control from next years GT-R.

Trading Spiders For Payment?
Are you having trouble paying your bills? Well don’t worry, David Thorne is in the same boat as you but instead of letting it bother him, he decided to think outside the box and offer some of his art in exchange for payment. Check out this hilarious thread if you missed it originally.

Calgary Transit Fare Increases
Not only are property taxes going to take a big jump, Calgary Transit also plans to increase the price of its fares. An adult pass is to jump to $90 up from $75. Also proposed is a $3/day parking fee at all park and ride lots. Some forum members think these fee increases are outrageous given the level of service being provided. What is your take?

Vibe 98.5 Cutest Kids Contest
A local radio station is running a “cutest kids” contest and of course with all the beyond kids we had a whole bunch of people posting threads trying to get some votes. Go support some of our members by voting for one of their kids! I linked to a thread by one of our long time members but have also included a few other ones below:

Please Welcome America’s First African-American President
This week American voters helped make history when they elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. The American people have restored my faith in them. For a while I actually told myself that I would not be surprised if McCain was elected President but then Sarah Palin helped ensure that would not happen.

Barrie Police Find Body of Boy Who Ran Away After Parents Took Away Xbox 360
The story of the boy who ran away after his parents punished him by taking away his xbox360 for playing too much Call of Duty 4 was on pretty much every video game blog. Microsoft even offered a reward for the whereabouts of the boy and cooperated with authorities by monitoring his Xbox Live account. Unfortunately this week, his body was discovered by a couple hunters.

Anyone Have Some Tips On How To Eat For $20?
With a global recession in progress, many people are started to get affected as they begin to lose their jobs. Consumer spending is at an all time low, as evident when automakers release their sales reports for Q3 and Q4. Retailers like Best Buy are bound to be hit hard this holiday season. This thread by a “poor student” asking for tips on how to feed himself for $20/week may be a sign of things to come.

Do You Recline Your Seat on Flights?
There were clearly two distinct sides to this debate. I never really thought much about reclining my seat when I fly. As soon as the wheels are up, my seat is always reclined as far as it will go. I’m all about maximizing comfort when flying and apparently many people find my actions extremely rude. Whats your take? Do you recline your seat? I’ll be honest though, if I was asked to move my seat back up a bit I would raise it back up a bit.

Is Canada Bending Over Backwards For Immigrants?
Everytime I read about another holiday being renamed in order to “not offend minorities” I feel that a little bit of Canadian culture is being washed away. We’re told that we should be saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, and more recently Happy Orange and Black Day instead of Happy Halloween. This is absurd! If new immigrants do not celebrate our holidays or do not understand our traditions, we should be teaching them about Canadian culture not pussifying our culture so they aren’t offended when we celebrate Christmas and Halloween.

Halloween 2008 Pumpkin Thread
Hey, if Halloween offends you please don’t check this thread out! Members have posted some of their pumpkins that they have carved. If you haven’t already done so, post a picture of your jack-o-lantern and share with the community your work of art.

Alberta: Pay Your Outstanding Tickets Now, Or We’ll Garnish Your Wages
In a move that dead-beat fathers may be familiar with, the Alberta Justice Department will resort to seizing wages, bank accounts and even tax refunds to collect payment on unpaid tickets if they are not paid within 30 days from the time a warning letter is sent. There is currently about $126 Million in unpaid tickets and the Government hopes to have as much success as they did with a pilot project two years ago in which they collected about 50% of tickets they targetted.

Calgary BMW Tech Takes Customer Car For Joyride
A Calgary BMW service tech took a customer vehicle for a quick joyride, unfortunately for the tech witnesses saw the easily recognizable HPF Stage2 Turbo M3 and notified the owner who is a local celebrity, rage2. To top it all the entire act was captured via GPS data-logging. Having your vehicle abused by lot boys and service techs is always a risk at dealerships but not at luxury brand dealership like BMW. Calgary BMW for their part is handling the incident very professionally! Kudos to them.

Foot Washing Facilities and Religious Rights at City Campuses
A thread about new foot washing stations at the SAIT and University of Calgary campuses has turned into a religious rights debate. To combat the issue of people washing their feet in washroom sinks, SAIT and the U of C have installed foot washing stations in some of their washrooms so students can wash their feet before prayer. Are those complaining about these foot washing stations intolerant? Are those arguing it is a religious right to wash their feet in public washrooms nuts?

Vote for Kerry in the Dean Guitars “Get Your Wings” Contest
If you’re feeling friendly, vote for beyond.ca member Kerry in the Dean Guitars “Get Your Wings” Contest? It’s basically a contest that’s a tribute to the late Dimebag Darrell. Some of the judges are going to be Matt and Corey from Trivium, Rita Haney, Vinnie Paul and others. “I did the video in a few takes and basically just rocked out. Guitar is in Drop D, slightly flat (the way Dime would’ve done it) and I didn’t shred as hard as I could. I just rocked out and did a take I was happy with. There are mistakes yes, but remember Vulgar Display of Power. That was my inspiration for this.” - Kerry

Do you know Danny Wyne? Help Solve Another Beyond CSI Case
Getting into an accident is one of the worst experiences you can have as a car enthusiast. It gets even worse when its not your fault and the other party is not accepting responsibility for their actions. Danny Wyne is one of these people. If you know a Danny Wyne, check out this thread to see if its the same guy and if it is, tell him to answer his phone!

Thanksgiving Dinner(s)
Seeing as how it is the Thanksgiving long weekend, I thought this thread was a perfect candidate this week. How many Thanksgiving dinners will you be attending/hosting this weekend? With the market on its seemingly endless downward spiral, it is extra important this year to take some time out to spend with family and friends. Try not to think of the world financial markets this weekend!

Calgary Flames Megathread 2008-2009 Edition
The NHL season started this past Thursday and the Calgary Flames did not surprise anyone with their traditionally great start to the year! ;) Jokes aside, I’m glad hockey is back and this year should be another exciting year to watch with the newcomers (I say that every year). While we got owned by the Vancouver Canucks on our season opener, it looks like we do have the potential for some serious goal scoring this year. I hope I’m not wrong!

Year End Honda Meet
A bunch of Honda/Acura owners are holding a year end meet tomorrow @ 2pm at the Home Depot Parking lot across from Chinook Centre . There is no planned cruise, so its just gonna be a big meet and chill type of event. If you’re interested in attending, sign up in the thread and post what vehicle you will be driving (it doesn’t have to be a Honda/Acura).

The Official How Are You Saving Money Thread
The economy is going down the drain, and the sky is falling. Banks are dropping like flies and the TSX has dropped below 11,000 points for the first time in a couple years. What are you doing as the economy slows down? Are you putting more money away into a savings account? Do you have a rainy day fund? Have you changed your spending habits? Sold that new BMW? Share what you’ve done to save money!

National Do Not Call List Registration / Complaint Website Launched
The Canadian National Do Not Call List was officially launched this week. About 75 - 80% of Canadians are expected to register their numbers for inclusion on the list and if the traffic volumes to the website on the first day were any indication, that number looks to be about right. For most of the day the website could not handle the amount of traffic hitting it, but eventually it became functional again and I was able to register all my numbers. Unfortunately, the list does have too many exceptions by allowing charities, political parties, newspapers, companies you’ve done business with and companies you’ve given written permission allowing them to do so will still be able to call you.

The Other Debate… yeah, the Canadian Leaders Debate
Most televisions (even Canadian) were tuned into the VP debate on most US networks when the English Canadian Leaders Debate was televised. I’ll admit, the US election is far more interesting than the Canadian one. So here I am doing my part to draw attention to the election here in Canada by devoting one of the weekly threads to the Canadian Leader Debate.

Nissan Dealers Drag Race Pre Delivery GT-R at the Track
Two brand new GT-Rs that still had plastic wrapped interiors showed up at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, WI on the weekend. This is one hell of a pre delivery inspection! I wonder how many miles the new owners will be able to drive before their transmissions need to be replaced.

Republican Strategy to Make Bush Look Intelligent and Qualified: Sarah Palin
If you ever needed a reason to be interested in U.S. politics, Sarah Palin is it. Every other night when I turn on the TV to watch the evening news, I see another story on Palin. This thread started out as a discussion about her proposal to increase transparency for Federal Government spending by putting the Government checkbook online as a searchable database. The bad news for Palin? Its already online thanks to a certain someone… whats his name again? Oh right, Barack Obama.

What are you going to do when the market crashes?
Many forum members calmly predict that the market crash is coming soon. The financial market is falling apart despite efforts of central banks around the world injecting cash into it. The real estate market in the U.S. has been battered, and the real estate market in Canada is beginning to slow down. In fact, some members of beyond are even looking forward to a market crash so things like homes become cheaper, and the entitlement generation will “learn a lesson”. Are we ready for a crash? Do we really know what to expect? What are you going to do if a crash comes?
