Beyond Summer Cruise: Sunday, August 23 2009

Check the forums for the “official” summer cruise thread.  Our Spring cruise was pretty awesome, so I’m hoping the summer cruise will be even better.  The date is August 23, 2009–late summer.  There will be no rocks, and hopefully the weather gods will cooperate with us.

Come out, show off your ride! Here are some pictures from the 2009 Spring Cruise earlier this year.

2009 Spring Cruise Is Tomorrow

Despite the snow, hail and rain we’ve received in the last 48 hours the 2009 Spring cruise is going to go ahead as planned tomorrow. With some luck, maybe the weather will warm up a bit so the BBQ wont be in freezing conditions :)

In order to help keep the group together at the start the meeting location has been moved further west this year to the Callaway Park parking lot. This is just about 5 minutes west of the city on Highway 1. The cruise destination will again be Cascade Pond inside Banff National Park. This means you will need to get a park pass or risk getting a ticket.

For more information on the cruise and the latest updates visit the Spring Cruise thread on the forums.

Happy 7th Birthday To Beyond.ca!

Wow, time sure flies by. Beyond.ca adds another notch on its belt. Last year, while recapping some milestones for our 6th birthday we had 47,000 members and 2.4M posts. We also had three members that surpassed the ever elusive 10,000 post mark. I say elusive because every time users get closer to it, we redefine what a “post” is and everybody gets a nice reduction in their official post count.

To celebrate our 7th birthday, we decided to kick two members out of the 10,000 post club and we’re left with the boss man himself, rage2 raj2 as the sole member of the 10K post club. We have over 59,000 members today and nearly 2.9M posts in our discussion forums.

This year, we have also partnered with Canwest Digital Media. There were many wild rumors about the ownership of the site changing hands but that is not the case. Our partnership with Canwest allows us to utilize their extensive network of print and online media to integrate into our site. We are constantly upgrading and working on bringing you the latest automotive news and media. As many of you have noticed, our advertising is also being taken care of by Canwest’s sales team. This has allowed us to focus on developing new features, and building the site itself.

2009 has been a tough year for many people with the world economy deteriorating and many people losing their jobs. As a result, many people are spending a lot less on toys such as their cars. With that said, we are fortunate enough to still have some car shows rolling through the city this summer. Be sure to join us at the Driven 2009 Auto Culture Show on June 13 @ The Big Four building on the Stampede Grounds. We promise to make it worth your while!

Thank you once again and heres to many more of these birthday posts!

PS: Can someone please send us a cake next year? :)

Wasteful Spending
It always seems like a good idea at the time, and sometimes a little retail therapy just feels great but after a few days buyer’s remorse sets in… for some people. What are some things you have purchased lately that you feel is a waste of money. Car wash the day before it snowed? $500 bar tab? Whatever it is, don’t worry too much because you’re just doing your part to help us get out of the recession. Spend baby spend!

Funny Car Acronyms
We’ve all seen some funny car acronyms like Company Has Recommended You Start Learning Engine Repair for Chrysler and Found On Road, Dead for Ford and now is your chance to share some of the best ones you’ve seen. There are a few good ones in this thread so check it out.

Vince Vaughn Engaged To Calgary Woman
It was all over the news when Vince Vaughn was rumored to be dating a Calgary realtor named Kara Weber. Now the couple are in the spotlight again after the Wedding Crashers star proposed to her. The rumor was confirmed this week by Kara’s father. The couple were seen at a LA Kings game where Kara was wearing an Iginla jersey. Poor Jennifer Aniston! (Yeah, I had to mention her)

Most Recognizable Sports Figure / Icon Of All Time
Ask a Calgarian to name a recognizable sports figure and the name Jarome Iginla will likely come up quite often, but what if you ask someone on the other side of the world? Who do you think would come to mind? Who would top the list of the world’s most recognizable sports figure? Michael Jordan? Tiger Woods? What do you think?

Another Dealer Takes Customer Car For Joyride
Acts of douchebaggery are not limited to Calgary BMW dealerships as proven by this latest joyriding incident, this time caught on video by the vehicle’s owner. A user by the name of “Scruit” on the Subaru Legacy GT forums had dropped off his car for some work after an accident. Unfortunately for the staff at the dealership, his vehicle is equipped with a Digital Video Recorder which was quietly recording audio, as well as video from four cameras located in his vehicle.

Publicity Stunt: Energy 101.5FM Stops Playing Chris Brown
In an attempt to capitalize on the alleged assault that took place right on the eve of the Grammy’s, a Calgary radio station has decided to stop playing all Chris Brown songs (at least for now). They claim it is because they cannot support violence against women but yet they’ll continue to play songs by artists that have lengthy criminal records. I’m sure many more stations will jump on the Boycott Chris Brown bandwagon but I think its pretty retarded, what about you?

Power Wheelchair Lady…In Traffic!
I’m really not sure how this thread has never made it onto the weekly review until today. This thread is probably the longest running thread on Beyond. Newer members may not be famiiar with it but essentially it is a “spotted thread” of the infamous power wheelchair lady who thinks her wheelchair is a motor vehicle. If shes not cruising around on Macleod Trail in the south, she’ll be rolling up to crosswalks taking out innocent ankles. If you do run into her, please say hi on our behalf and try to get some photos! Free prizes to anyone that gets her to wear a beyond lanyard or slaps a beyond sticker onto her wheelchair.

Less Rush Hour Traffic Lately?
Many forum members have noticed their morning and evening commutes have become noticeably shorter due to lower traffic volumes, especially in the deep south where commute times have dropped by up to 15 minutes. Have the hefty layoffs finally started affecting traffic on the roads? Some suggest it is due to people tightening their spending and switching to transit instead of driving but some transit riders have also noticed that transit vehicles are less crowded. Some experts have forecasted 2009 to be one of the worst years, and I guess we’ll see soon how bad it is getting.

The Dangers of a Faulty Hood Latch on a Highway
Recently a Beyonder went through quite a scare while driving on Deerfoot Trail. His hood latch failed and with his vehicle travelling at highway speeds his hood ripped open suddenly smashing into his windshield. Temporarily blinded, he was able to pull over safely to the side of the road to assess the damage. Incidents like this aren’t as rare as you may think, especially if you have a modified vehicle.

Another Day, Another Google Street View Funny
Google Street View is an excellent tool provided on Google Maps offering a street level view of many locales. It is a great way to explore and map out cities you plan on travelling to. Another great use of Street View is to find hilarious scenes captured by the Google camera vehicle used to generate the images. This time it looks like the camera car had a little run in with some wildlife.

A C63 AMG Like No Other
In the land of excess, a C63 just doesn’t cut it anymore. Well, either that or the stigma of driving one of the “lower end” vehicles from Mercedes is too much to handle for the owner of this C63 who decided to add a little bling to his ride by having it dipped in gold. If you can’t beat them, blind them! Check out the pictures in this thread for a crazy ride. FYI, its actually a vinyl wrap job and not gold paint but its still pretty cool to see. Not sure if I’d be able to rock something like that, but hey to each their own!

Roses for Valentine’s Day
I’m sure there are a lot of guys on here (and maybe even some girls) that think Valentine’s Day is the dumbest day ever. Another Hallmark holiday created and commercialized so restaurants can double their prices and halve their service. However, for those of you who DO plan on doing something special for your girlfriend, wife or other special someone in your life a new sponsor has joined Beyond.ca offering a bouquet of roses for only $59.99 with free delivery. They will also be providing late night delivery service (until 11pm!) so check them out if you plan on going out for V-Day.

Police Parade Goat Around as Robbery Suspect
The next time you complain about the Calgary Police Service doing a poor job, refer to this thread. Police in Nigeria are holding a goat as a primary robbery suspect and will continue to do so until their investigation is finished. A vigilante group made the “arrest” and handed the goat over to police. They claim the goat was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape. The belief in witchcraft is common in Nigeria, and apparently stupidity runs pretty rampant over there too.

Do you know why I pulled you over?
At some point in time, drivers will hear that question from a police officer. Most if not all of the time we know the answer to the question but we never know what we should say. Should you be honest and admit fault or play dumb and hope for the best? If you’re honest and get a ticket anyway, you’re screwed with no recourse. If you lie, you may lose out on the warning you would’ve got and be handed a ticket. What would you do?

2009 Calgary Motorcycle Show
The Calgary Motorcycle Show runs this weekend (it actually started yesterday) so if you want to check it out, tonight is the night. There is a coupon available to be printed if you check out this thread. The coupon is valid anytime after 5pm tonight and gets you $3.00 off. Check it out, take some pictures and share with everyone when you get back!

BART Officer Shoots Man In Back During Arrest
After what some witnesses are calling an execution style shooting, a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer has resigned. The incident happened just after New Years in Oakland when officers were responding to a brawl at the Fruitvale station. The man who was shot, Oscar Grant was lying face down as officers were trying to place him in handcuffs. Immediately after Grant was laid to rest, riots broke out all across Oakland as citizens grew increasingly frustrated over the lack of communication from the Mayor on the status of the investigation.

Beyond.ca Photographers Meet – January 17, 2009
A bunch of photogs are going to meet next Saturday at the Good Earth Cafe downtown. If you don’t have any plans, sign up so everyone knows how many people to expect and drop by for some coffee and camera/photographer talk.

Best TV Shows Flying Under the Radar
There is a lot of great television on these days, in fact theres too much! I can’t even keep up with a PVR so I’ve had to stop watching certain shows that don’t make the cut as there just isn’t enough time to keep up. Many people miss out on shows simply because there are so many of them trying to get our attention and inevitably, some of them slip under the radar. What are some shows you love that are not getting the attention they deserve?

Speed On Green Cameras Approved in Alberta
Red Light Cameras in Edmonton and Calgary will soon have a new feature enabled on them that will let the Police collect revenue for those that speed through intersections. While the original rationale behind the push for “speed on green” cameras was to nab drivers that sped up when the light turned yellow, the functionality allows the cameras to take photos of drivers that speed through intersections even on fresh greens. The province has allowed cameras to begin operating with the new features effective January 1, 2009 but it will take some time to turn on the new features. Calgary Police plan on having a grace period of 90 days before actual tickets are issued.

Tom’s Bottle Recycling Center Reviews Thread
This thread just had to be a part of the weekly review! :) Tom has been gracious enough to write up a review of two bottle depots in Calgary when he recently did a quick test of them. He got 100% of the money he was supposed to at both places and gives them both a thumbs up if you plan on recycling some bottles in the near future (who isn’t with all the CHRISTMAS dinners coming up?).

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! :)
