Smart Forstars Concept Arrives in Detroit

The Smart Forstars concept, which made its debut at the Paris Auto Show last year, makes its North American debut in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show this week. Looking bigger than your typical Smart, it’s a sneak peek into the future design direction of the Smart brand.

The bodywork is tough to explain after seeing it in person, and the only words I could use to describe it was aggressive cute. It looks like a bad guy out of the Disney Cars movies, with the large intake openings in the front bumper resembling dimples and a smile, while the headlights surrounded by LEDs looking like angry eyes.

Under the hood, the Forstars is powered by an 80hp EV motor (good for 128km/h), as well as a home theater projector. That is not a typo, there is in fact a movie projector under the hood, so you can drive up onto a wall, and steam movies from your phone to the wall for a retro drive-in theater experience. Audio for passengers and nearby friends play through the surround system, with speakers hidden in the ventilation grills behind the doors.

The Forstars is truly a quirky concept, which I find as a car guy as well as a cinema buff a little odd. My girlfriend thinks it’s cool, so there is definitely some sort of market for such a feature, but it’s doubtful the movie projector will have any chance to see production.
