Mercedes-AMG E43 Unveiled in New York

While Mercedes-AMG unveiled the new E43 two weeks ago online, this is the first time we get to see what the fuss is about. Even though hardcore AMG owners have panned the new 43 line as AMG Lite, the E43 begs to differ as it is one serious machine, slotting between the E400 and the upcoming Merecdes-AMG E63, effectively replacing the old E550 4Matic.

Powering the E43 is the tried and true 3.0L V6 Biturbo engine found in the SLC43, C43 as well as the now retired C450 AMG Sport model. In the E43, the turbochargers have been uprated, boost increased, and pumps out an even 400hp. The AMG specific 4Matic 31:69 rear biased AWD drivetrain coupled to the all new 9 speed transmission puts the power efficiently to the ground, allowing the E43 to sprint to 100km/h in only 4.5 seconds. Mercedes-AMG also retuned the AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension system, adding a Sport Plus mode to deliver higher levels of cornering agility.

Improving upon the base model E Class, the E43 sports a front bumper with larger air intakes to optimize airflow to the oil coolers, 19 inch AMG five spoke wheels, a faux diffuser as part of the rear bumper, finished off with a trunk lid spoiler. Inside the E43, ARTICO and DINAMICA (Mercedes’ version of Alcantara) are used extensively, from the ultra supportive sports seats, to the door panels and dashboard. Red stitching throughout as well as red seatbelts adds to the distinctive sporty feel.

Expect to see the Mercedes-AMG E43 this fall in dealer showrooms. No word on pricing yet, but don’t be surprised if it comes in pretty close to what the E550 was selling for.
