Mazda Unveils All-New Compact Crossover Mazda CX-3

Today, Mazda unveiled an all-new compact crossover model, the Mazda CX-3 at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. The CX-3 is the latest model to adopt the KODO design language featuring a full range of SKYACTIV technology. With the CX-3 Mazda says they have pushed and evolved the KODO design language for an enhanced sense of speed.

Slotting in under the larger CX-5 crossover, which also received a facelift, the CX-3 features a more “3D” grill that is thicker and bulges out more. Other differences include a slightly different fog light housing but in general it looks like a mini CX-5 which is not a bad plan as the CX-5 is pretty good looking. From a side profile, the CX-3 features beefier wheel arches compared to the CX-5 giving it a slightly more rugged look given its smallest stature. The new headlights complete the menacing look for the CX-3.

While there are a few engine choices around the world, for North America, the CX-3 will utilize the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gas engine which will be paired up with a six-speed automatic transmission. The CX-3 also comes with Mazda’s next-generation all-wheel-drive system employing an active torque control coupling system borrowed from the CX-5 which comes with a front-wheel slip warning detection system

I think Mazda has a winner with the CX-3, at least in the design department. Once they hit the road, we’ll see how the baby CX-5 will stack up amongst its ever-growing competition. Until then, check out the gallery for a ton of photos from the live unveiling.
