Last week at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show Lexus unveiled their new LC500 coupe and made a smashing visual impact. The logical next question was whether it performed as well as it looks. Akio Toyoda, CEO of Lexus and Toyota, talked at the launch about the public’s reaction to the Lexus brand saying how “boring” isn’t a word he would like to associated to his company and cars.

The Lexus brand has been known for luxury, comfort, quality, and all round suitability for every day life driving. The sum of these words don’t really translate to exciting, spirited, performance oriented driving. However, the LC 500 seems to be designed from the ground up to overcome the stigma of being “boring”. Just look at this spec sheet. The LC 500 packs a 5.0L, quad-cam, 32-valve, all-aluminum V8, which is shared with the RC F and GS F. The engine produces 467 hp and 389 lb/ft of torque at and propels the LC 500 from 0-100kph in 4.5-second. Power is transmitted to the axel via an all new 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The LC 500 coupe looks to be getting put through its paces on the track at this time. Much of the track time is being dedicated to data gathering for refining the engine, transmission and suspension setup before the car hits the showroom at the beginning of 2017.
