Last Ditch Effort To Block Retarded Road Closure Fails

May 11th, 2009

One Calgary Alderman’s wishes to shutdown a section of a major east-west corridor will be granted despite a last attempt to quash the plans. Those that were against the plan to have 2 of the 4 lanes of Memorial Drive closed every Sunday during August did win a small victory however. Instead of reducing the capacity of the roadway every Sunday, the City will instead close it only for one Sunday in August. The date has tentatively been set for August 16th.

While I would have hoped for the plans to be scrapped completely, changing it to a single day makes me happier. If you want to run an experiment, lets keep it simple and try it for a single weekend to see how it works. I’m also quite dissapointed in how Ald. Druh Farrell chose to do something like this without consulting people that use the roadway daily or the residents that live in the area.

Here is a video that I found on a Jane Morgan’s blog that provides a great visual to this whole Memorial Drive Promenade debacle.

  1. Damn I hope I have this day off!

  2. Well, at least it is only one day now. I think it would be cool if it was a planned event or something. Like a farmers market event. But closing it down just because, that is dumb.

Now i want to drive past that one day just to see how much of it will get used.

  3. Thanks for the plug guys. It was actually my hubby who created the video.

But I drive a waaayyyy cooler car than he does….LOL… You can check it out here:
