LA Auto Show: Nissan Hi-Cross ConceptPosted by: Shelton Kwan onNovember 29th, 2012
Nissan unveiled the Hi-Cross Concept today at the LA Auto Show, which shows off design cues of Nissan’s next generation crossover line. While the Hi-Cross is a compact SUV/Crossover, the Nissan was able to stretch interior room to SUV like proportions. Sitting on its 109.4-inch wheelbase and 183.5-inch overall length, the Hi-Cross Concept was able to squeeze in seven-passenger seating. This is accomplished due to it’s short front and rear overhangs, as well as its compact drivetrain.
On the outside, the Hi-Cross Concept features aggressive LED headlights, 21 inch wheels, and trapezoidal LED taillamps that mimics the headlight design. Bold lines are splashed across the cabin, which gives it a edgy futuristic look, while fitting in with the current crossovers on the market.
The Hi-Cross is powered by a 2.0L engine, mated to the drivetrain with dual clutches, but not with a DCT gearbox. The first clutch sits between the 2.0L engine and the electric motor, allowing the engine to completely decouple the drivetrain in all-electric mode. The second clutch sits behind the CVT transmission, is used purely to smooth the transition of the drivetrain moving power between the gasoline engine and electric motor.
Today, the Hi-Cross Concept is just a design exercise, but rest assured that the design and engineering of this concept will find it’s way into future Nissan products.
