Infiniti New G Sedan, Now Called Q50

Now that we’ve had time to wrap ours heads around Infiniti’s new naming scheme it’s time to take a look at the cars that will bear it. The Q50 is the replacement of the G37 sedan and Infiniti Canada was kind enough to leak photos of it ahead of the show here in Detroit, so you’ve probably already seen the new exterior. It’s not a significant break from the G37, they just pinched the grill and creased the hood. It’s still got a bulbous front that I never really thought fit in with the luxury sports sedan segment. That said, it’s still a welcome improvement in my opinion.

Update: Infinity Q50 MSRP: $36,450USD on launch, no details on Canadian MSRP.

The interior gets loaded with new technology including the latest release of Infiniti InTouch, which allows the driver to customize what they see on the dash. Their i-Key system recognizes up to four different drivers and can adjust cabin settings accordingly. The overall feel of the interior is one of comfort and sportiness. While the seats aren’t a significant improvement over the outgoing model, the center console definitely is, bringing a strong push in the luxury direction.

The Q50 gets its power from the same VQ37 that Nissan has been using for years, though it also comes with a hybrid 3.0L option with an additional 65 HP motor. Both the gas and hybrid models will be available in rear and all-wheel drive configurations and with 7-speed automatic transmissions.

We’re obviously more excited about the Q60 coupe here, and we hope that it’s a bigger departure from the existing G37 than the Q50 is. Despite a completely new name, the Q50 feels more like a mid-season refresh than a full upgrade. Which is a shame, because the changes they’ve made are all positive.
