Curb Side Recycling Coming Next Month
February 25th, 2009The City of Calgary blue cart curb side recycling program will start to roll out on March 9th. The city plans to phase in the system starting with the SW quadrant. Delivery should be complete by early April and the first collections will begin on April 21-24 (same day of the week as your garbage collection day). The city will then proceed to the NW, NE and finally the SE. Collection will begin on June 9 - 12, June 30 - July 3 and May 12 - 15 in those respective quadrants.
The blue carts will certainly make recycling much easier as you no longer need to sort your recyclables. For those of you who already recycling using your community recycling depots, the city will accept plastics in the blue cart recycling program. All plastics with codes 1-7 will be accepted.
All this convenience unfortunately comes at a cost. $8 will be added to your Enmax bill as soon as collection service starts in your area. The curb side recycling program is also not an optional program so even if you decide to use your blue cart as a new lawn ornament you will still be billed $8 each month. Community recycling depots will also be converted to accept plastics, and will also no longer require sorting after the conversion.
Is the convenience worth it? Will you recycling bottles with deposits using the blue cart curb side recycling program or will you continue bringing them to the bottle depot yourself? It will be interesting to see how this program will affect local charity/fundraising bottle drives.
The City will be doing a series of Open Houses if you want more information:

Wow, the Blue Cart Program is Awesome. I live downtown in an apartment and wish that we would be able to have this at my use as well. 8 dollars is peanuts. Most people spend more than that at Mcdonalds. And by the way compared to the City of Calgary website this site is extremely progressive. Absolutely amazing! So user friendly and visually stunning!! I am wondering if it is being outsourced. Well finally something great coming from my taxes. Keep up the good work!!
About time! We are only 10 years behind on the times. It’s great to see this program in effect! I just might start recycling now that it’s available!
This would certainly be welcomed in our household since we recycle everything here. I have no problems paying the extra $8/month for the convenience, since we make frequent trips just to recycle paper alone. Hell, we don’t even have to sort things out now!
Been waiting a long time for this!!
BUT, I will still be taking my cans and bottles to the depot to recover the cost of paying for this program
Finally!!!
Damn been waiting for this for a while now.
But I dont think I will be joining the masses.
I have seen an older asian lady ( and yes i know shes asian as i have confronted her )
go thru my garbage looking for cans and bottles, and she always makes her rounds before the garbage truck comes.
Sad to see this,
BUT
The blue bin program is a really good program.
Just that Calgary is like 10 years behind on this.. LOL
This is really awesome.
Do they take all types of recylcing (cardboard, tin cands etc)?
Congrats calgary, you are only 30 years behind southern ontario. However, southern ontario doesn’t charge extra fees for cans and bottles, so you don’t have to worry about bumbs sorting through recycables, since its not worth anything to them. (except for beer cans and bottles, which can be returned for a refund directly at the beer store)
Calgary, and most of the west for that matter, is still way behind however, since in southern ontario, you can also put in any type of plaster, as well as tin and newspaper in with the blue box! So basically anything recycable goes straight to the curb.
Even though I applaud the City for implementing this, I’m still going to bring my bottles to the depot for cold, hard cash.
yea what the hell, why would they charge $8 a month when they don’t even get your money back for your bottles?
either drop the recycle fee or get rid of the $8 fee.
Keep your bottles and recycle stuff you didn’t pay a deposit for. This will be great, it sure beats having to gather and haul everything to the recycling bins.
Well shit.
2 months after I move to airdrie.. they introduce this? Rude. Just rude.
“Community recycling depots will also be converted to accept plastics, and will also no longer require sorting after the conversion”
Are you talking about bottle depots or the green recycling bins because I work at a bottle depot and no we do not have any plans to start accepting any type of plastic. And yes you still have to sort out the bottles that you pay deposit on and the ones you dont.
No, not the bottle depots but the recycling centers (green bins) throughout the city.
Just got our bin today =D S.W. Area.
This is BS. Just another way the city take your hard earn money. Why the hell would I pay something that I can simply drive a few blocks from my house and drop off THE recycle garbage for free. why the hell would I give my bottles to the city, where they can cash in at the bottle depot. It’s like double dipping. They tax you on the recycle fee and now they charge you to collect it. WHAT HELL IS THIS?? I understand that some lazy ass can’t get off their sofa and drop off the stuff but we should have the option to accespt this service. BUNCH OF BS!
i think the recycling thing is stupid.. they should sort out the garbage at the dump….
if i get one im filling it up with cement!!!!
Hi
To Whoever
I think the hideous blue bins make this city look more filthy and redneck than ever! My culdesac looks like a trashy trailer park now with all those ghetto hideous blue bins everywhere.
Not only is the garbage out front, now the hideous blue bins are there as well.
Could they be any BIGGER? I have seniors living beside me and they are wondering if the city is trying to kill them. Not only do they have to haul their garbage to the front street, now they have to haul the hideous blue bin as well. Its not easy for the seniors to manipulate. Most people are having a hard time trying to find a LARGE spot for the hideous blue bin to reside until its garbage day. I want mine hidden as its an eye sore and makes my property look like a Ghetto.
I was just shaking my head as I drove to work today and all I saw all over the residential streets are those hideous blue bins everywhere. Its just looks low life, scummy and trashy.
The neighborhood I live in used to be very nice…….
Thanks for Listening
