Canada Votes: Much Ado About Nothing

October 14th, 2008

So Canadians went to the polls today in another Federal election amidst an economic crisis playing out around the globe. Stephen Harper’s minority Government got a little bit stronger by gaining about 18 or so seats while the Liberal Government lost 20 seats. Without a majority Government, even some Conservatives feel that the whole election may have been a big waste of money. Others however feel that trending towards a majority is good enough.

“I think we’ll have wasted our money if we don’t get a majority,” Conservative supporter Jan Sproule said as she watched the results in Harper’s headquarters.

One of Harper’s big name backers begged to differ.

“They managed to get a minority last time and they’ve got a stronger minority this time. The graph is going up,” said former Reform party leader Preston Manning. “We’d all like to see it get to a majority faster, but I don’t think you can complain about the trend.”

Perhaps it was the thought of a Liberal “Green Shift” carbon tax driving fuel costs higher that scared voters away from voting for the Liberals or perhaps Canadian voters do not yet trust the Conservatives to steer the ship on their own but one thing for sure is that all parties will have to work together to ensure the global economic crisis is handled properly by our Government. Interestingly enough, had the economic downturn been delayed a few weeks, we may have elected a Conservative majority Government like earlier polls had suggested.
