BMW’s X4 has made quite a dent in the Sport Coupe Vehicle space racking up an increase of 118 percent in sales in 2015. Therefore, it’s only fitting that BMW starts off 2016 but debuting an M variant of the X4 to celebrate the success of this model in the BMW lineup. The X4 M40i made its debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show today where BMW President and CEO of North America Ludwig Willisch spoke to a packed room about the impressive vehicle with an equally impressive spec sheet.

The exterior of the M40i has been worked over by the people over in the M-department giving this X4 a nice muscular boost all around. The front sports a deeper facia with larger grille openings flanked by brushed aluminum finishes. The M40i rides on exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, the rear sports a new diffusor with twin exiting dual exhaust pipes, and exhaust notes are enhanced through a performance exhaust system with valve control.

BMW also showcased to the world their new 3.0L six-cylinder in-line engine which is packed into the M40i. The engine features BMW’s advanced M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology delivering 360 hp with 343 lb/ft of torque. Power is transferred to the tarmac through BMW’s rear biased all-wheel drive system and chassis dynamics are performance tuned via beefier springs an sway bars. The M40i is capable of a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and topping out at an electronically governed 250 km/h. Amazingly, the M40i still gets 8.6 l/100 km (27.3 mpg).

The BMW X4 M40i is expected to hit showroom floors in spring of 2016.
