Acura Unveils Production Version of Flagship RLX

The 2014 Acura RLX may very well be the much needed shot in the arms that Honda needs for its luxury brand lineup. The Acura RL has had better days–sales have slipped every year since it was launched. With this latest version of its flagship sedan, Acura hopes to claw its way back to the top of the Japanese luxury vehicle market–a market that they in fact pioneered. Excitement around the Acura brand has been building with news of a new NSX but it is the arrival of the RLX that may vault Acura back to the #1 position to complete the come back.

Acura has left nothing to chance, the RLX comes with a host of bleeding edge features one would expect to find on higher priced German luxury vehicles. The most striking new feature–at least on the surface–are definitely the new LED headlights. In fact, even before the unveiling I heard some journalists behind me talking about them as they were shining through the white cover. While other manufactures are busy making mean facial expressions with swishes and swooshes of LED light bars, Acura is using LED technology as their main headlight. The Jewel-Eye LED headlights use a couple rows of high wattage LEDs and highly reflective lenses to provide a powerful beam of light.

It also will be the first vehicle to utilize the 3-motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive technology first previewed in the NSX concept. Of course in the RLX the 3.5L V6 powers the front wheels while electric motors assist by providing propulsion to the rear wheels.

The interior of the RLX is a tech lovers dream. Dual LCD screens serve to provide information to the driver and one serves as a touchscreen to provide climate, stereo and navigational input. The usual Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure warning, Collsion detection, etc systems are all present. Sadly one other feature still exists. Yep, you guessed it–the shield grill. Unfortunately theres next to no chance that Honda will issue an emergency refresh for the RLX to change the grill. Too bad.
