2017 Ford Fusion Energi

The range race is getting fiercely competitive amongst automakers to try and capitalize on the plug in/hybrid market while the diesel market continues to tumble. Ford’s all new Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid now offers up 610 miles of available range. This is a bump by over 60 miles from last year’s model. Plug-in hybrids do consume gasoline, but they offer the convenience of running on full electric power for a limited distance, switching to gas when the juice runs out.

In a statement by Ford Fusion Marketing Manager Wade Jackson, “Plug-in hybrids are electric vehicles until you run down the battery, then they work exactly like a conventional hybrid. Fusion Energi with a full battery and a full tank of gas can go from San Diego, through Los Angeles and all the way up to San Francisco, and still have up to 110 miles of range remaining.”

The problem today for full electric vehicles (EVs) is that the infrastructure for charging stations is still in its development phase. Sure you can plan your long road trip to make sure you have stop ins for a recharge, but drivers today still like to drive until the “tank” is near empty then pull in for a refuel/recharge. This is what makes plug-in hybrids handy, in that they have the extended range with electric and also the convenience of a gas motor which owners can fill up at any station.

Ford thinks the hybrid market will continue to expand and EVs will still be playing catch up. Over the next four years, Ford plans to release 13 new plug in hybrids.
